Stay Active in Sun City Grand with one of the biggest crazes... Pickleball! According to pickleballcentral.com the sport was created close to my home town of Seattle WA, on Bainbridge Island. The family dog "Pickles" would chase the balls and hide them. They became known as Pickle's balls which was then shortened to pickleball.
Pickleball has become a huge sport in our Arizona Active Retirement Communities. Dare I say... more popular than tennis?
All I know is, one of my Sun City Grand clients has become absolutely gaga about pickleball and wants me to get out on the court with her. If I wasn't so busy selling real estate I'd take her up on it. She loves it (and I think her sister needs a break!). I even ran into her out in Sun City Festival while taking clients around looking at homes. There was a pickleball tournament going on and she and her sister were checking it out.
What a great way to stay active! One of the most important areas to strengthen as we get older is our body core. What better way to keep our core strong then to move around on a pickleball court.
Plus... it's fun! Just check out the pictures on the Sun City Grand Pickleball website. Here you will also find pickleball playing tips,

It is about time that some sport replaced tennis. There are tennis courts thoughout the world that have been sitting empty since 1985. Around here they see more street hockey than they do tennis these days. I am going to have to look at those pickleball sites and see what it is all about.

Robert - I wonder if you'll see it take off up in your Alberta active retirement communities (once the snow melts of course). It has taken off like wild fire here. There are pickleball tournaments happening all over and you can hear the balls hitting the pavement as you come near the rec centers.
Kathy-Pickleball is really a fun looking game. Would like to try it sometime. Great history on it. I didn't know that it was named after a family dog. Thanks for sharing, this great information.
Josee - I had come across a video of the Sun City West grand opening of their pickleball courts at yourwestvalley.com and it got me thinking about my Sun City Grand client and how much fun she had with it. I posted this article before the one on Sun City West.
Pickleball was big news in the Sun Cities. I see someone else blogged about it right after I posted this one but before I posted my Sun City West article.
