AZ Active Retirement Living

There are so many restaurants in the Surprise Arizona area that I decided to break them down into two maps. The first map gives you more of the fine dining options. Most of these are national chain restaurants but there are a few in the mix by local entrepreneurs. In some cases I've used the term "fine dining" loosely. Some of these restaurants are more like a Denny's, offering a wide variety of dishes.

The second map shows you most all of the areas fast food restaurants and pizza joints. If you click on the link to take you to a larger map, it will list out all the restaurants. If you click on the corresponding balloon you have the option of getting directions if you are not familiar with the location.

I'm sure these maps are by no means complete but they should give you more than enough options. Can you tell we Arizonan's eat out a lot?

The Property Owners & Residents Association, known as PORA, also has a wealth of information. They also provide lists of recommended vendors for work you may need to have done.

Looking for something to do? The biggest attraction by far for moving into the Del Webb communities is the abundance of clubs and facilities. Check out this list for the Sun City West clubs. Don't see what you are looking for? Start your own. Although I would venture to guess it already exists.

Sun City West is also home to the Maricopa County Events Center. You never have to leave the community to see some great shows and entertainment. People come from all over the valley to see these productions that are right here in your backyard.

Work on El Mirage and Deer Valley Road has started (Click on the link to see the full report plus a map of the work to be done)

Starting Monday, July 14, 2008, the Maricopa County Department of Transportation (MCDOT) contractor will begin roadway construction of a new segment of El Mirage Road extending from Deer Valley Road to SR Loop 303. The project will construct a new six-lane (three travel lanes in each direction) roadway extension of El Mirage Road from Deer Valley Drive to Williams Road and widen the existing El Mirage Road between Williams Road and SR Loop 303. Construction is scheduled for completion in Spring 2009.

The new road will border the east boundaries of Sun City West & Corte Bella, opening up a much needed passage from Bell Rd to the Loop 303. Many Sun City West and Corte Bella residents that back up to the proposed road may be unhappy as this will undoubtedly affect future property appreciation values. The needs of many have outweighed the concerns of some however. This is a much needed route that will eliminate congestion on other area roads.

In case you missed the news like I did... according to the Maricopa County Department of Transportation it looks as though Sun City West will get the sound barrier wall they want. The proposed wall will cut back on noise from the adjoining Loop-303. The proposal was passed by a regional council of the Maricopa Association of Governments.

In Sun City West, the sound-buffer project had been slated for 2011, or later, but with the vote Wednesday to fund the wall, the construction is expected to begin within a year.

Max Wilson, a member of the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors whose District 4 precinct includes the retirement community, said the project vote was unanimous.

"This additional project will help us maintain the high quality of life enjoyed by so many in Sun City West," Wilson said.

Yesterday, September 3rd, 2008, the Greater Phoenix Economic Council (GPEC) named the city of Surprise a "Greening Greater Phoenix Community,"

"This is quite an honor to have Surprise recognized for its availability of green sites, which includes a commitment to build in infill areas, and designating areas inside the community that would serve well as cluster sites for environmental employers," says Economic Development Director John Hagen.

If building a cleaner community is an issue close to your heart, you may want to take in one of the two upcoming educational events the City of Surprise will be hosting this month.  On September 20 and 27. industry leaders will be on hand to showcase solar products and explain how they work for the residential and commercial markets.
